He's not big into Lego either, he finds the small stuff too tricky but has sort of outgrown duplo now.

If you dont have much money, dont be afraid of carboot sales my two love searching down boxes of toys for stuff they want, they can get 3 or 4 things for their pound.
My 4.5 year old son also love Lego, playmobil (picked it up cheap on bay) and wwe style wrestlers ( we get them from the 99p shop), plus the small wrestlers called little rumblers.
My son loves going into pound land and spending his pound a week pocket money, puzzles, toy cars, dolls or action figures all last for ages.
You dont have to throw away any preschool toys, if your son still finds them fun, then they are fine for your sons age.
If you go with him, he can pick for himself what he wants. He still plays with duplo but is now getting into "Big Boy" lego - the proper stuff! He also still plays with some "baby" toys but that's fine too. His concentration skills have developed enough for him to sit and do lego (but still with help from me or DH if he's building something specific - otherwise he's happy to experiment! He also still enjoys playdough, colouring in and craft stuff.
